Instagram and TikTok have made teeth whitening one of the most searched dental topics online. But most of what’s advertised doesn’t work — and some products actively damage your teeth. Here’s the honest breakdown.
What actually works
Professional in-clinic bleaching (most effective)
A hydrogen peroxide gel is applied, activated by a special light, and monitored for 45 – 60 minutes. Results are visible in one session — typically 4 to 8 shades lighter. Lasts 1 – 3 years with maintenance. Cost at ToothInc: ₹8,000 – ₹15,000.
Custom-fitted take-home trays (great value)
We make custom trays matched to your teeth, and you wear them 30 – 60 minutes daily for 1 – 2 weeks. Nearly as effective as in-clinic, at lower cost. Cost: ₹5,000 – ₹8,000.
Whitening toothpaste (minor maintenance)
Effective for surface stains from coffee, tea, and tobacco. Won’t change your actual tooth colour but keeps professionally whitened teeth looking their best.
What doesn’t work (or actively harms you)
Charcoal toothpaste
Abrasive. Wears down your enamel. The temporary whitening effect comes from scraping off tooth surface — permanently. Avoid.
Baking soda + lemon juice DIYs
Acidic. Erodes enamel. Once enamel is gone, teeth actually become more yellow as underlying dentin shows through.
Over-the-counter whitening strips
Some work, but concentrations are so low that results take weeks. Ill-fitting strips also cause sensitivity and gum irritation.
Whitening pens
Mostly marketing. The gel washes off with saliva within minutes.
Who shouldn’t whiten
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Children under 16
- Anyone with active cavities or gum disease
- People with veneers or crowns on front teeth (they won’t change colour)
Book a consultation first
We always assess your teeth before recommending a whitening method. Some yellowing is genetic and won’t respond well — veneers may be a better option in those cases.
